David Barnett, M.D.

Dr. David Barnett is board-certified in neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He has practiced at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas since 1996. Dr. Barnett served as Chief of the department of Neurological Surgery for over twenty years as well as the Medical Co-Director of the Neuroscience Center for Baylor University Medical Center and the Neuroscience Council, BS&WH North Division.

Growing up in Texas, Dr. Barnett was diagnosed at age 7 with Legg Calvé-Perthes disease which prevented him from walking for over 3 years. From the experience, Dr. Barnett knew he wanted to be a doctor  when he grew up so he could help people just like the doctors who cared for him. In 1985, he graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Texas Tech University. He then attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas where he graduated with Alpha Omega Alpha honors graduating 8th in his class of 197. In 1996, he completed specialty training in neurosurgery at Emory University in Atlanta, where he served as chief resident.

In 1996, Dr. Barnett and his family returned to Texas where he launched his career to care for neurosurgical patients from throughout the Southwest and beyond. He is an expert in diagnosis and the conservative treatment of disc herniations, degenerative disorders and injury-related spinal disorders. Dr. Barnett understands the individual needs patients have when faced with a neurological disorder and endeavors to educate his patients about their condition and help them
understand the treatment options. He strongly believes that patient trust is an integral part of the doctor-patient relationship. Dr Barnett wants his patients to know that his employees are unsurpassed, each having years of experience in their position. They have a genuine concern for helping patients by providing the highest quality treatment and service.

Dr. Barnett’s patients describe him as compassionate, down to earth and no nonsense. They know that his consistent approach to developing the right action plan and achieving the best outcome based on their individual needs will lead to the best treatment option for their specific situation. Dr. Barnett emphasizes patient education and a thorough explanation of all treatment options in a way that everybody can understand. He is a big believer in using minimal incisions and minimizing muscular trauma to offer better surgical solutions for his patients. He also offers surgery in an ambulatory surgical setting for those patients who are medically appropriate. As a result, the techniques and surgical options that he offers eliminate the need for patients to travel to other cities for minimally invasive or laser surgery.

Dr. Barnett offers his expertise in the treatment of the following disorders with either minimally invasive or standard procedures as appropriate:

  • Disc herniations-cervical, lumbar and thoracic spine
  • Spinal stenosis-cervical, lumbar and thoracic spine

Dr. Barnett’s Testimonials

"Dr. Barnett and his entire staff are excellent. You can tell a lot about a doctor by the way his staff treats you. Every person was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. This is so rare these days! Dr. Barnett listened to our concerns, answered all our questions, and explained the procedure well. The surgery went great and I am happily recovering. I highly recommend him! – healthgrades.com"

"Dr. Barnett was an answer to prayer for my husband and myself! We traveled a long way to seek his services and have been very pleased with his care. I feel blessed to have had my surgery where the patient is so well cared for. Every person we encountered made us feel so comfortable and welcomed. – healthgrades.com"

"I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have went to Dr. Barnett for a second opinion on my spine. Before I went, I read every single one of his reviews and researched his background. All those great reviews are 100% true. Dr. Barnett is very compassionate, you can tell right away that he really cares about you and the best treatment option for you (not his business). He doesn’t rush you in and out. After being told by another surgeon that I needed surgery, Dr. Barnett told me that my condition is nowhere near needing surgery right now. He is honest and his first priority is truly the patient and not lining up unnecessary treatments. I can honestly tell you that he is honestly the best doctor I’ve ever met with! – healthgrades.com"

"Dr. Barnett is a very talented doctor and an extremely blessed individual who is professional, yet very personable. After my first appointment I knew he was a man that truly cares about your health condition and only wants the best for you. His staff is the same and a pleasure to work with. Dr. Barnett removed a brain tumor in March 2012 and recently operated on my lower back due to a herniated disc. He is very honest and speaks the truth about your situation and possible outcome. Most importantly, he is a strong believer in Jesus Christ and gives Him credit. Dr. Barnett goes above and beyond, and I highly recommend him! After the results of my two surgeries, he has my complete trust. – healthgrades.com"

"Dr. Barnett was my second opinion on my spine. My originally referred neurosurgeon wanted to do an extremely invasive surgery to my spinal column. Dr. Barnett took a much more conservative approach that allows me range of motionin my neck and overall better quality of life. He’s professional, cares about his patients, and very thorough. I highly recommend him to any spinal stenosis surgery patients. He will not push you or rush you into a surgery decision. What he will do though is arm you with the very best information you can get about your condition, so you can make a smart decision. – healthgrades.com"
