Rory Mayer, M.D.
Dr. Rory Mayer is a dual fellowship-trained spine surgeon with Texas Neurosurgery LLP in Dallas, Texas and is affiliated with Baylor Scott and White Health – Baylor University Medical Center, Baylor Scott and White Medical Center – Uptown, and the Methodist Hospital for Surgery. He specializes in the treatment of complex and difficult spinal disorders including adolescent and adult scoliosis, flat back syndrome, kyphosis, kyphoscoliosis, primary bony tumors of the spinal column, and metastatic disease to the spine. He is an expert in minimally invasive applications to such complex spinal disorders and he has training experience in both image-guided and robotic spine surgery.
Education and Background
A native Texan, Dr. Mayer graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin. He attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and graduated receiving the Kinjiro Iwata, M.D. Award for Excellence in Neurosurgery. He completed his residency in neurological surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He received extensive sub-specialty training in neurosurgical oncology and spine tumor surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center and in pediatric and adolescent spinal deformity at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Mayer also completed a CAST-certified enfolded fellowship in neurocritical care and spine trauma while at Baylor College of Medicine. He then went on to complete a fellowship in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery at the University of California in San Francisco.
Dr. Mayer’s has significant clinical research interests and activities with over 100 abstracts, peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and presentations at the national and international level. He is an active member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, AO Spine North America, Lumbar Spine Research Society, and the North American Spine Society.
Dr. Mayer understands the significant concerns patients and their families have when dealing with spinal disorders and the impact they have on their well-being. Dr. Mayer is proud to work closely with his neurosurgical colleagues and the excellent staff at Texas Neurosurgery. He believes that the team approach, partnering with our patients and their families, is the key to successfully managing and treating complex spinal disorders.
His goal is to provide patients with a straightforward understanding on their condition and develop a treatment plan together that emphasizes non-surgical options before proceeding with any surgery. Due to Dr. Mayer’s training, when it comes to surgery, his goal is to offer the most minimally invasive options available to his patients. He has advanced training in spinal image-guided surgery and robotic surgery and aims to have a frank discussion with each patient and their family regarding the relative benefits of minimally invasive approaches for their spinal condition.
